Default Civic DIY?

Just bought a 1990 Honda Civic GL 1.5l auto for Mrs Thor. It runs beautifully (for its age). One niggle I have is that it doesn't want to start from cold. Takes a few turns. Once it seemed to have killed the battery but a pause then a few more tries and it fired up. No smoke, no running on, no hesitation on acceleration and no pinking. A long time ago I used to do simple maintenance on my cars but well ... that was a long time ago. I don't have any of the tools now except for some emery paper but it's probably too fine to clean the spark plugs. Should I try my hand at diagnosing the problem by buying some tools to clean or replace the spark plugs and/or check the battery out OR should I just take it to a mechanic?
