Did the spindle come out of the oil filter easily? If so it was not tight in the engine. If it's stuck in the filter you can look to the last guy who changed the oil. Could be the wrong filter, cross-threaded, or a defective filter. The spindle just threads into the engine block, but it is supposed to be in there much tighter than how it fits into the filter.

you are only supost to tighten down 3/4 of a turn after the gasket makes contact with the motor. Although sometimes the filters do get stuck on there... done oil changes on a few cars where i had to stab the filter with a screwdriver and use that to turn it, no every time mond you , but it does happen.

You have no issue. Clean off the threads in the oil filter bracket that holds the spindle and the spindle threads with some brakekleen (don't squirt any inside the engine) Let dry. Apply 3-4 drops of blue loctite to the spindle threads and hand screw into the engine leaving enough hanging out for the oil filter to grab (1/2=3/4"screwing inside the filter) then allow loctite to set up for 2 hours. Install new filter, hand tighten, add 1/8 turn with wrench, add oil.

Also they make attachments for sockets wrenches that grip and expand inside of tube to tighten without crushing threads. I've only used it to tighten NG pipe nipples though, but it works real good.
