Clutch Squeak
I have a 1994 Civic Sedan DX with 147k... I purchased it at 144k and don't really know how well its been maintained. The previous owner claims that it has the original clutch on it... which I find hard to believe but I guess you never know.
THE QUESTION: When I push down on the clutch with the car on or off I get a squeaking sound. I don't really notice it while driving, but when the car is off and you push up and down on the clutch you can really hear it. The clutch itself seems solid and I tried doing the hill test in a high gear and I didn't notice any slipping but I don't think that has anything to do with this problem.
I was reading another message about clutch squeak and they were saying it could be a bad throwout bearing. Would this make sense? Someone else mentioned to me that it could be air in the clutch fluid?
Any help would be greatly appriciated. -Jim

I have a suggestion,,,does the noise come from outside the car? or under the dash????If it is under the dash, you are in luck...I have an 03 civic that only has 17000 miles on it and the clutch pedal squeeks too. This is due to the the small spring that holds the clutch pedal. I wouldn't replace a throw-out bearing without knowing it is the problem. I would oil my clutch pedal spring under the dash first,,,,The throw out bearing would make a loud noise on the outside and may make it hard to shift. If you are sure that it is the throw-out bearing, I would highly recommend that you go ahead and replace the clutch, and pressure plate along with the throw-out bearing and the pilot bearing too,,,good luck,,,hope this helps
Pretty sure that the noise is coming from the engine bay area becuase with my windows closed I dont' really hear it much. If I recall correct, I had a friend listen with the hood open and he thought the noise was coming from the transmission area.
However, the clutch is not slipping (tested with a high gear going up a hill -- engine dogged out like it should) and the clutch does not feel hard to press. Though I have no real comparison on what the clutch should feel like becuase I've only owned the car since march. It has been squeaking since april.
I will go ahead and try oiling the spring on my clutch tommorrow and see if it helps any.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to think about clutch/bearing replacement... it may not make sense since I plan on doing a new motor within a year hopefully. Maybe I can make it last until I get the new motor.
