Default Computer swap

If I put a similar computer in my 98 Civic will I need to get it programmed??

You should get the same ECU, not something "similar". You cannot chip and re-program ECUs which are OBD2 (96+) as well.

They're not intended to be programmable, even by a dealer. You need to match up:

OBDIIa (1996, 1997) vs. OBDIIb (1998 - 2000)
HX (D16Y5 engine) vs. not HX
automatic vs. manual transmission
VTEC vs, not VTEC.

They should have the same "P" number on the label. Then it is plug and go.
