Default coolant level...crazy design!

Hello,
I just bought a 1986 Civic and I am very surprised by a very particular point: I can't check my coolant level! The water tank is very low beneath lots of other stuff, and it is impossible to see the "max" and "min" marks. Crazy isn't it? How can I know what the level is? I can't believe I have to go to a garage and lift the car to look from under it everytime I want to check the level!
Anyone knows about this? I have never seen this before...
thanks a lot for any suggestion

just have it flushed and filled with fresh coolant, that way you know it's fine.

Open the radiator cap before you drive it. If it's full and the coolant still has color to it, your good.

Another question (1994 3 door): if its losing coolant all the time - the radiator takes up to a litre after every run) where are the obvious places to check for leaks?
