could low compression be the isue
Hey guys I was just wondering my civic dosent start very well at all or not at all if it is cold out like below 15 deg. i was just wondering could it be that i have low compression. I think it is fludding out but maby it dosent have enough compression to combust. I dont have a compression guage so i dont know what it is but im pretty sure that it is pretty low the motor is worn and burns oil or consumes oil like no other. please help. Thanks.
If its burning oil, especially like crazy, then it is very possible that you have worn rings. The worn rings will also give you the low compression you suspenct. The only way to know is to run a compression test. See if you can rent one from Autozone or a similar store. They are pretty easy to run. Take a spark plug out, screw the compression tester in. Take a fuse out that will stop the engine from starting. Have some1 crank the car over. Write down the highest number you see and do the next cylinder. Do every cylinder. THe compression should be around 160 and all cylinders should have the same. If you suspect bad rings, put some oil in the cylinder to coat the rings, not too much though. Run the test again, if the compression goes up then you rings or valve seals are bad.
