'02 civic lx, commuter car (driven everyday). Turned it on this afternoon and struggled to stay on after turning over, but once i started driving, it drove fine for the commute home. During the drive, the temperature gauge spiked to the H, but no other gauges went off to signal a problem. I quickly turned the car off. Now the car will crank, but not turnover.

Haven't looked under the hood yet, but wanted to post here and see what the most common problems are that exhibit these symptoms. very little experience w/ cars....

Sound like multiple issues you're having, let start with tune up and check your radiator fluid.
