Default cruise control diagnostics

Gents:

Just picked up a 2000 ex 5 sp with a non-functioning cruise control. I will be going thru the system bit by bit, but I thought I would throw out a general question to those that have experience with this system - are there any areas that you would check first?

The inst cluster light does not come on. The vacuum lines look OK.

Thanks!

If the light on the button comes on but the cruise won't engage and light the light on the dash, check the switches on the brake and clutch pedal. Common for the rubber pad on the pedal arm to fall out and then the button on the switch doesn't get pressed.

How does THAT happen, unless someone was in there tampering, replacing air-bag, or did it on purpose ? It doesn't just work itself loose, does it ?
