Default Cruise Control Inop

I got in to my 2001 Civic EX 5 speed today, went to activate cruise control on I-95 and poof, like Keyser Soze, it's gone.

I always leave the CRUISE push button on the dash engaged..have for 10 years, as I use it all the time. So when I hit the SET button on the steering wheel I was surprised that it didn't engage, as it had yesterday and every workday since Jan 2001. I tried cycling the CRUISE button several times and the SET and RESUME buttons, too, but no luck...no cruise.

Fuse...vacuum leak...I gotta get the maint manual from the library and check out the circuit.

Any probably areas to check ?

Thanks, in advance.

Problems with the brake light switch will cause the cruise to think you're pressing the brake pedal thus it will not engage. If it's manual there is also a similar switch on the clutch pedal. The rubber pad that presses the button on the switch tends to fall apart then the switch doesn't get pressed and the cruise won't engage.

re: Brake light switch....Then wouldn't the brake light's be on ? Anyway, the brake lights appear to be funtioning normally.

re: Clutch pedal switch...if that switch were bad, I'd think that the car would start without the clutch depressed..it doesn't. Seems to be OK.

Thanks for the tips.

There are two separate switches on the clutch pedal. The one at the bottom cuts out the cruise. The one at the top enables the starter.
