Default distributor cap o-ring?

Went to do a tune up on my 98 civic ex and the dist cap came with a big o-ring but I didn't see an old one around the rim of the old dist cap, does it go in there? I installed the cap without it should I try makin it fit or is it for another model car? Please help I'm confused and stressing

yeah, it goes around the rim of the cap to keep water out, which would ruin your distributor in no time if it were to get in.

ok i took the cap off and found the old o-ring thanks for your help guys, now i have another situation, i found fresh oil on the bottom of the dist cap where the old o-ring was, but that ring doesnt seal off any fluid just fits into a groove so any clues to where this oil could have came from? i tried runnin my finger from the spot to the end of the dist thinkin it might be the o-ring in there but it was bone dry.

Without actually looking at the car.. My guess would be that it's running up the distributor shaft..
Is the shaft loose?

by the shaft seal do you mean the o-ring? because i cant find any trace of oil near where it connects to the camshaft, its almost like it skips that part and lands on the bottom of the dist cap.
