Default DTC Code P0501

[/align]Hi,

My daughter just bought a 96 Civic EX. It's now throwing a code P0501 for the Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance.

Can anyone inform me what this is for, why the code is being thrown and what to check? I am very unfamiliar with Hondas unfortunatley. I am assuming that it has to do with her speedo cable circuit? Anything to worry about here?

Thanks in advance!

The speedo is electronic. The VSS outputs pulses proportional to road speed, the pulses feed to the speedometer/odometer and the ECU. The sensor is mounted in the top of the transaxle above where the wheel axles go in. Find the sensor and make sure it's cable is securely plugged in. If the problem persists you may need to replace the sensor. It just has one bolt, take the bolt out, pull sensor out, and put in a new one and secure it with the bolt.

It's also possible (anything is possible with a used car) that the ECU and transmission are not matched to each other. If the road speed doesn't correspond with the engine speed thru an expected gear ratio, you get a trouble code.

Also check whether fuse #15 (7.5 A) for the VSS circuit in the under-dash fuse/relay box has blown.

Firstly, I apologize for the delayed reply! The notification e-mails were just found on my e-mail server spam box....which I only check about once per month.

I want to thank you all of you for your valued input on my post, I am sure that this will help out tremendously in my troubleshooting this for my daughter. If I have a problem, I will surely post it...again, thanks so much.
