Code 1 indicates a problem with the O2 sensor or the fuel pressure regulator, though I don't think either would cause specific failure of cylinder 4. Nonetheless, here's how to determine whether code 1 is in fact indicating a problem and, if so, what the problem is:

I don't think a fuel injector is the problem because, based on my understanding, the main and auxiliary injectors of the dpfi system each control two cylinders, with the auxilliary injector controlling fuel to cylinders 1 and 2 and the main injector controlling fuel to cylinders 3 and 4. Therefore, if one injector was bad, I think you would have two bad cylinders rather than one.

If dead cylinder 4 is caused by a fuel problem, then I think a more likely cause is the ECU or the wire between the main injector and ECU terminal 7, which controls fuel to cylinder 4 (for troubleshooting see diagrams in post #13 in this thread ).

You can purchase a basic digital multimeter for about $15 (Sears, Walmart, etc.). This is an essential tool for troubleshooting.

Regarding code 1, just reset the ECU, and then run the car to see if code 1 returns. If so, troubleshoot as detailed in the diagram. Here's how to test the fuel pressure regulator:

By the way, you really should download the 1988 Civic service manual (Added May 15, 2008) from this website:

https://www.spoonhonda.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=119

All the diagrams and information that I have posted for your Civic have come from this excellent manual.
