engine management light on

hi. i have a civic coupe 1.6 on an 1998 "s" plate.. i ahve a management light on, and the car runs sweet as a nut.. just want to know if there any obvious things to check. i'm a mechanic, but dont have diagnostic equipment for cars... so if there is anything i can visually check, i will do before i go and blow loads of money at a garage.

take it to an auto zone (or any automotive store) they should be able to scan for the code for free

As you are in the U.K., I guess you won't find an AutoZone. Here's a method to retrieve the Check Engine Light (CEL) code at home:
