Default exhaust smoke after changing distributor?

I replaced the distributor on my 1989 civic lx (was running poorly and frequently stalling). And now there is a significant amount of exhaust smoke and all 4 plugs are fouled. What have I done?

Black smoke?

Did you check the ignition timing after replacing the distributor?

grey smoke that smells like fuel. didn't use a timing gun - rather, turned distributor by hand. such a small amount of adjustment, i thought i could do it by listening to the engine.

If it smells like fuel, the smoke is likely black, indicating that the engine is running rich. You need to use a timing gun to set the ignition timing correctly.
