Extra cranks for the engine to start.

It's fuel pressure that causes it. Notice that if you let your car sit for a long time (meaning the fuel pressure is going to be relieved), and then try to start it very quickly, it often takes more cranks to get started, because you have to wait for the fuel pump to prime and build adequate pressure before the engine will start.
