It's me again - Honda likes Honda fluids - however, do I have to use Honda fluids for everything? I mean I know the answer to that, but is there anything wrong with using non-Honda coolant as long as it meets their requirements - ditto on stuff like engine oil and ATF - is there a consensus on what stuff should be genuine and not? I've got the stuff on order for my timing belt change and I'm going to go ahead and do the oil and replace the coolant while I'm at it since I bought my baby 2nd hand and have no idea when the last time either was done.

I know it's probably a dumb question, but I'd like to make sure she lasts as long as possible and I know that means good maintenance practices with the right stuff.

you'll get different answers depending on who you ask.

For me,
I use regular motor oil (not honda brand) 5w-30
I use regular Dot3 brake fluid (OReilly's brand)
I use a non-Honda brand P/S fluid though it says that it is designed for Honda specifically
I use regular coolant

some here strongly suggest using Honda MTF/ATF. I heard that you can use 10W-40. I think mine has that right now when my timing belt was changed a couple of years ago.

no issues to report yet on any of these fluids.

 

doesnt matter if its honda brand or not just get good quality shiit. like Royal Purple oil (good shiit but expensivish).

 

Use Honda or Honda-recommended transmission and power steering fluid. Other high quality fluids can be used in the engine, clutch, cooling system, and brakes.

 

Thanks for the info! Looking forward to getting my hands dirty this weekend. That Royal Purple stuff *is* expensive - almost $9/quart at the local parts store down the road. I don't want to open too big a can of worms but I assume I can get by with a good quality dino oil?
