Default fuel gauge

I have a 96 civic and i had to replace some gauge cluster lights, accidentally dropped a light in with the gauges so i removed the fuel and temperature gauge to get the light, i reassembled everything but when i started up the car the gas gauge read full, i only had a half tank before i did this, so i filled up my tank, but i drove about 100 miles already and the gauge did not budge at all still reads full.
Any ideas what happened??

thanks, ill check the wiring, also those metal caps on the back do they just protect the internals of the gauge or do they serve a purpose? asking this because the one fell off and i dont know if i put it back on exactly the same could i have messed up the polarity of the electronics or something by flipping it around. jw

Btw what connector should i be looking at the two main one's or is one of the smaller ones more localized to that gauge. I did disconect all of them so it could be any one

Checked all the wires, they all were in their slots and snug so i don't think that is my problem.

I have no clue why it did this, is there a fuel sensor or something that could have went bad?

Any ideas appreciated
