Default Fuel gauge drops to E

We have a 2002 Civic LX and recently the fuel gauge dropped to E while we had a full tank; it only happened once and is reading normal now. Before it happens again, any ideas ? Traditional logic says the gauge itself, the sending unit, or a connection between the two (?)

i would say the float got stuck but if the tank was full then that wouldn't be it so your quess is as good as mine. put some Seafoam in the gas tank just incase. you can also run a instrument panel self diagnostic test.
