Default Gear drive from park to drive wont move

HELLO ANYONE..anyone with any tips at all..i have a 2000 honda crv. once in a while . when i turn on the engine, the stick shift ( column type) not the floor type, the gear wont go from park to drive or to any gear..its just stuck on park.. called someone and they said theres a reset button untop of the steering wheel box, right in front of me by the gauge meter. anyhow, when this happens, the rpm since high, but when it goes back down, its when i can shift the gear. hasnt done it a lot lately, but i'd hate for my daughter to always pressing that reset button..anyone have any idea what i should look for? i bought the chilton's service repair manual, but it doesnt say anything about it..thank you in advance..JOE

I have an 03 Element that tries to do this from time to time. In mine, you have to press the brake pedal a little harder before it will come out of park. It might be a brakelight switch or safety switch adjustment on the pedal.
