Default Gremlin, wont start

When I turn on the key the turn signal indicators and the brights indicator come on. When this happens the engine won't get any spark.

It is better to keep all this stuff related to the same problem of not starting in one thread.

Strange interaction between seemingly unrelated electrical stuff is almost always a bad ground. Turn key on and measure with a voltmeter to confirm the car body and the engine block are both near zero volts relative to the battery (-) post. Check that the ECU ground wires on the thermostat housing are secure and also zero volts to battery (-). The cluster has a ground somewhere behind the dash but I'm not sure if losing it would cause no spark.

You also said the previous owner had added some new wires?

They had bypassed the wiring harness for the starter wire. Hence when I hooked up the wiring harness correctly it wouldn't start.

I just wired all the ground wires to the starter, block and where the harness connects to the thermo housing.

When I turn on the headlights I can hear the fuel pump engage and the dash lights come on for the seatbelt door etc....

I think that this is some kind of cross wiring between the lighting system and the ignition system.

It sounds like you don't have the body grounded. The big wire from battery (-) should bolt to the body first then go on to the transmission / engine assembly.
