It's a different version of vtec. Here's a quick description of the difference.

If I'm not mistaken it's all of the y8 valve covers, so 96-00.


Also, the 4th, 5th, and 6th VIN digits are the chassis code, not the engine code. The only place on the car that gives the engine code (that I know of) is a small section of the block where it's stamped into the metal.

The 2 stage SOHC VTEC engine shown in the picture was sold only in Japan I think. Notice that the (single) camshaft runs down the center of the head, so it's a SOHC. Stock SOHC Civic engines in the USA were either non-VTEC or one stage.
