You have to take the whole dash out of the car first. That is actually not as hard as it sounds. Just go slow and remember how everything goes.

Also if you have a car that is working stock but with no A/C, you can add A/C without changing the heater box or removing the whole dash. The A/C parts are designed for ready "bolt on" installation through the glove box opening.

Here's what I remember about dash removal, but I may have left a few things out. It is mostly obvious what to do. For example whenever wires are stopping you from removing something, unplug them.

* Make sure the power windows and sunroof are closed in case you need to leave the car outside while it is taken apart. The electrical wiring will be disconnected.

* DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. I put this as a separate step because it's very important.

* Remove the glove box.

* Render the passenger airbag safe by unplugging it and plugging in the red shorting connector which should be nearby. Remove the airbag unit and set it away from the car and people, facing up. Also put the safety on the driver's airbag, the plug is under a cover on the steering wheel. You will not need to remove the driver's airbag from the car. You do not need to do anything with the SRS control module.

* Remove the center trim (upper and lower), radio, heater control panel, hazard light switch, instrument panel trim, and instrument cluster.

* Remove the 4 bolts holding the steering column to the sub-frame and lower the steering wheel/ column assembly down. Removing the driver's seat may be helpful to have more space.

* Remove the bolts holding the dashboard in. I know there are 3 on the top: one at each end under covers you can see when the doors are open, and one under the center defroster vent (pry the vent grille out). Not sure where the other ones are.

mk seems to have you covered but, if more details are needed, download your Civic service manual at the link in my signature.
