Please let us know what the end result is. I am trying to fix a '94 with the same symptoms. Somehow I doubt that the ecu is at fault. They usually don't just go bad unless they got wet or damaged some other way.

Yeah, when the CEL is ON but no code can be retrieved, the ECU may be bad. Prior to purchasing a new ECU, you might want to verify that the wire running between MAP sensor and ECU has continuity.

I assumed that the CEL was staying on because the engine wasn't running... but i'm still thinking the ECU seems toasted. I was about to order one when I found that they were going for $1000 new and $600 rebuilt. So I passed the car to a local garage to get a 3rd opinion before I spent half the value of the car on an ECU.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll let you know what they say.

Check whether a local salvage yard will sell you a used ECU.
