Honda Civic 96 needed new O2 sensor now tailpipe
1196 Civic EX 2DR
My check light came on and the Honda Dealership said they ran code on it and the o2 sensor needed to be replaced. They charged me 530 USD to replace the Honda Civic Rear Back Oxygen Sensor - Measures Oxygen In The Exhaust. 36531-p2P-A01.
The next few days I noticed noise from the tailpipe. 2 weeks later the noise from the tailpipe is deafening. I am sure this is all coincidence. I preface my next question with the fact I know little of cars...
Did the o2 part need to be replaced or was it a function of that my exhaust system was failing ? I went underneath my car and the muffler looks good, but if I were to guess the tailpipe is the original. It was very rusty. I have 110,000 miles on the car.
When I asked the dealership they said they would never inspect the exhaust when dealing with an o2 failure.

Well when i worked at the Honda dealer we always looked over the whole car. If u work for a dealer 9 out of 10 times u are payed book rate. So u are not getting payed unless u are working on a car. And if i was replacing an O2 sensor i would deff look over the exhaust to check for any leaks. It sounds to me who ever work on your car was being a lazy *** and didnt want to make money that day. And $530 dollars seem like alot of money for a O2 sensor. I know they have diagnosis charges but damn..
well thing to do would be get under the car and start it up and listen to where the noise is coming from! there are 3 gaskets along the exhaust system and one could have just blown out from them jerking on the piping trying to get the old O2 sensor out. id say its either the one right behind the cat converter or right infront of the rear passenger wheel, those are the 2 common spots where gaskets fail. just look for a black residue which is usually visable when a gasket is blown leaking.
