how to add a/c in a civic that don't have one.
i got a civic that don't have a/c. ANd living in cali...i really need one. what parts do i need to gather up and what to do? OR is it even possible to add a/c to a non a/c car?
Hey SickAss;
The a/c system I added this summer to my 98 HX ended up costing about $650 and took 2 days to install. So, it can be done takes some patience, $$, and a good local mechanic to troubleshoot what you may F*&^k up. Start with a complete a/c kit from a salvage yard that will provide ALL the pieces, not just the components that they are used to selling. Make sure that they plug all the hoses to keep out contaminates, that you get the wiring harness, bolts, the (2) fuse relays and the a/c diode. As a precaution replace all the O-rings. Once you've got it all installed go to your local shop to charge you up.

sickass, you'll have to keep us posted on this one. It would make a great DIY. I know there's a lot of us that would like to know exactly how to do this and any problems you run up against.
HXville, did you need to replace your dash unit so that you would have an A/C button and controls?

I am working, , , well tried, , , still in the process of installing A/C to my non-A/C 90 Civic.
First, I was on the internet looking for ready made A/C kit for the car. There was a kit available for later model Civic but no for mine. So, I log on to a site (junkyard dog.com?) and searched for a junkyard(s) who may be able to help me. There were two places gave me reply with actual price quotes. One in COand other in CA. Others who replied said to call them. The one in CO was less expensive so I order "the complete A/C kit" to them. I am in FL.
One week later came "the kit". Well, it looked like what's left of the kit. The package was broken and some parts may have fallen out. The kit contained compressor, condensor, dryer, evaporator, A/C S/W, compressor mount bracket and tubes/hoses. There was no relay nor wiring harness. And the low pressure tube out of evavorator was ripped off from the doner car and the fitting to install was missing. I called th junkyard and send me some hoses and tubes. I don't know which car they are from. . . I ordered front fender to this place and what they sent me was for a sedan and I have hatchback. I called them on this and they insist the fender is correct one. . . .
I was disappointed and discouraged. The kit is sitting on my shop shelf for a year now and I am sweating in the car everytime I drive. I will find a time and a will to work on the car. It could be in winter time. By then it will be cooler to work on it. It too hot now.
I would recommend to go to local junkyard so you can talk face to face. And you will be able to solve any issue you may have with them.
