Its going to be hard to get leverage on it to tug on it. Put a big screwdriver in between the axle and the trans and pry it out. Thats how the service manual shows it and it worked when i did it.
its not that hard, just a little time consuming. i used a ball joint seperator (pickle fork) and just pryed it until it pooped out, its not hard. but getting it back it takes a little bit of force. and you will lose some tranny fluid, so you might want to buy some for the job.
Tranny fluid is so simple to replace, that should be the easiest part of what your going to do. I have a DIY in our DIY section for the tranny fluidif you want to check it out.
Take the wheel off remove the wheel hub, you can undo the top ball joint so you can swing out your control arm and assmebly and stuff for more room if needed. then get a flathead and jam it in between the tranny and axle an pry. Its a pita usually but doesnt require much skill plus you save a good chunk of change. Good Luck!
Note: If you are removing an axle, and reusing it for whatever reason, DO NOT PULL ON THE AXLE to remove it from the tranny. PRY it out of the housing using a large screwdriver. If you pull it out of the tranny, it will pull the out of the tripod joint, and will SUCK trying to get it back in. Do you best to pry it out with the screwdriver.
If you're just replacing the axle, don't worry about it. Just keep it in mind when you are putting the new one back in, and you need to remove it for some reason.
