How do you know when you have a bad gasket?

take the radiator cap off (when the engine is cool) and then fill it and start the car, let it run and if bubbles come up the radiator cap its a pretty sure sign of bad hg, as are the mixing fluid. I would check the oil and color of smoke from tail pipe (if any color that is a sign of something burning that should not be). Compression test is a great way to check too...
