how to fix a slipping transmission or is it toasted period? 1997 civic lx sedan
really not that hard of a swap all mostly all bolts right up
need: any from 96-98
manual trans
manual starter
manual trans mounts
complete clutch kit
flywheel and bolts
hydrolic clutch cylinder and all lines
brake pedal
clutch pedal and assembly
hydrolic clutch resevoir
shift linkages
shifter
thats all the most important stuff
then you can get the manual ecu(if you dont swap it will just have a cel on until you change it)
and the manual cluster( difference the automatic cluster will have the prnd21 still on the cluster)
we have a few poeple here who are also doing this swap right now and a few who have already done this swap. i am one of them who already have

i think it would be easier to just put in a automatic rather then go though all that work swaping things! what year of automatics prove to be the most reliable? i would think 2000? should i get one from a 97 civic lx? can it come from a vtec engine or does it have to be nonvtec?
ok guys, what do you guys think, the chk engine light says po-715, and po-700. i am told that this sensor, the mainshaft speed sensor, NOT the vss or countershaft sensor, can cause the trans to do all kinds of funny stuff if bad, i talked to the honda dealer and he tells me that the trans is pluged. the screan in the middle, but i find that hard to beleive because all my gears work but 1st. as of now, it slips in 1st gear, and sometimes won;t shift to o/d. when this happens, i slow down to 40mph and shift to 2nd gear. it sometimes will make a breif grind when it goes into that gear, then the o/d is restored. i beleive something is bad in the countershaft area because i disconnected that sensor to see what it would do and it made that same grind sound when i shifted to D, but it did that sound continualy. fyi, there is 3 speed sensors on the transmission. the tech told me to check the sensor omh and replace it if out of spec. what i am wondering is that if i do replace the mainshaft sensor, if that would fix my issue. the three sensors are the vehieal speed sensor, mainshaft speed sensor, and countershaft speed sensor. i guess they all tell the trans to shift or not to.
1st: Honda is not so kind as to give you a changeable filter. It's internal and you can't get to it without tearing the transmission apart.
2nd: No, a sensor isn't the problem if it's slipping and grinding, plus has metal on the drainplug. Did you put Honda fluid back in or stuff from the parts store?
3rd: I would change it out with any 96-00 auto, a junkyard one should work and getting these rebuilt is not cheap. If you want a lot of work you can swap in a manual, but I would not do that personally.

yup this piece of sh*t is done, i was driving home and all of sudden it starts chucking and grinding when i was accelerating driving it. it still moved but it makes grinding sounds when moving foward, and reverse makes a wine.
