Many knowledgeable members will likely give you some valuable tips. In the meanwhile, download an appropriate Civic service manual here:

A head gasket change is quite a big job. You should at least have a general idea of what needs to be done to get to the head gasket. Its different for all cars because of clearance/component placement, but the basic steps are the same. You have to remove the cylinder head, and once that is done you can get at the head gasket. To remove the cylinder head to you have take off the exhaust and intake manifolds as well as anything attached to them (like the air box etc). You will also need to remove the timing belt and the distributor. You may also have to remove other things like the PS pump in order to get the cylinder head. The service manual or a program like AllData will be able to give you exact details on everything that needs to be done.

I like to pull the head with manifolds still attached, it's less stuff to disconnect and you don't need to deal with manifold gaskets.

you will have to essentially disconnect more things from the intake manifold than if you would remove if just from the head. Like vacuum lines, electricals. If you need it I could get the steps from school tommorrow morning and mail them to you or whatever but it would be easier to do with exhaust mani and intake mani disconnected from the head.
I can tell you general steps now to take off the head,
First off remove the intake and exhaust mani, spark plugs, and wires timing belt and anything else AgentofDarkness, or RonJ said.
Disconnect wiring going to the head, LABEL THE WIRES so you know where they go or number them and number the connections
There are about 6-8 bolts on the valve cover.
Then too the head. 8 bolts to remove, but you will probly have to remove the camshafts. I am not sure i haven't personally removed a head on a OHC engine yet.
After that you should be able to remove it.
DO NOT NOTE ME ON THESE EXACTLY i am not sure exactly what you need to do just write back on here today to tell me if you need me to use ALLDATA to find you the steps.

It's not a project for beginners either way.

The thought of taking all those nuts off of the bottom of the intake/head junction, then putting them back on, while the engine is in the car doesn't appeal to me.
