Usually... I do all my own work, except in my older age... I'm guessing taking it to an ASE certified, full warrantied partner for $600 is the smartest bet.

Yes they do that. Warranty is a great thing because before it does that, it will typically send out shards of metal that will cause repeat failure if not fully cleaned out of the system. Condenser is usually replaced being the first component downstream of the compressor and difficult to clean out.
