Did you happen to disconnect the heater valve cable under the dash?

Check whether or not the heater valve on the firewall under the hood properly opens and closes when the heater lever is operated.

Also check whether the coolant level in the radiator and reservoir is full. If all seem fine, then another possibility is that the thermostat is stuck closed.

Do check your coolant level to be sure it is OK. Low coolant can cause intermittent heat. Wait for the engine to get COLD then take off the radiator cap and confirm the radiator is completely full.

I think he meant to say stuck open a thermostat stuck closed will cause overheating, a thermostat stuck open will not allow the motor to reach operating temp.
