Default K&N high performance filter

Just wondering what the general consensus is on K&N filters. If what they claim is true (more HP), then wouldn't that increase gas consumption also ?
Is it worth spending extra $$ (even if it is just to replace the stock air filter with a K&N). Thanks for any input.

slight increase in gas mileage prolly, slight increase in power, a K&N short ram or cold air intake is very good though. K&N makes really good filters, but i don't think its worth dropping the money on the full K&N intake. I'd get an eBay pipe with just the K&N filter. A pipe is just a pipe, you're paying for the filter anyway.
