keyless entry 98 civic
Hey Guys,
I got a Honda keyless entry transmitter off ebay, with the assurance that any honda dealer could program it into my car. However a mate of mine who works at Honda tried tonight by turning car on then transmitter button then car key off and repeat.. but it didn't work. He was going by a 1998 service manual procedure. He doesnt think the little module 'air bubble' thing to point the transmitter at in the procedure isnt where its meant to be which is why it isnt working. Does anyone know how to do this succesfully? Or whether I can do it at all? Thanks!!

What car? It already has keyless entry & you want to add another transmitter?
Try this... It worked on my '98 & '03 Accords; I'd guess it'sthe same system.
1) Unlock Doors
2) Turn ignition key to "ON" position (II)
3) Press the "LOCK" or "UNLOCK" button on the remote
4) Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position (0, I)
5) Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position
6) Press lock or unlock
7) Turn key to off position
8) on position
9) lock or unlock
10) off position
11) on position
12)lock or unlock - doors should cycle to indicate successful programming. If you only have one remote, turn ignition to off or don't touch anything. if you have 2+ remotes, go to 13:
13) lock on each transmitter that you need to program
*Steps 2-12 must be performed within 5 seconds of each other. Step 13 can be performed within 10 seconds of step 12.
What's this little module air bubble thing? This is from the Helm manual for '98 Accord, and there's no little air bubble thing...

thanks for that mate, thats basically what we tried with the instructions saying the transmitter must be pointed at the reciever at all times, and in the 98 civic book there is a little module thingy on the base of the rearview mirror which is the reciever, however on my 98 civic GLi there isnt one, and after this procedure not working, we thought the reciever may be somewhere else. The GLi has central locking, but only works throughone door (driver door) and never came with a reciever but I was assured when I bought the transmitter that it was compatible with my model.
well if the radio is aftermarket then i dont think the factory system will work!
i believe the keyless entry system is built into the 96-98 radios....
if so easier to just buy a aftermarket keyless entry system and wire it up, not to hard to wire up.

you have to have the stock radio in your car, and the turning the ignition on and off procedure won't work. If you have your stock radio, you can program it yourself. There's a little button that looks like a trim piece in between the am/fm and cd/tape buttons. That's the valet button. You have to do the following steps
1) Turn your ignition to the on II position
2) hold down the valet button
3) your display on your radio should go blank and your door locks should cycle
4) once that happens, press either the lock or unlock button on the remote (keep holding down the valet button while doing this step)
Presto! you have a working fob.
Keep in mind that it only works if you have an LX or an EX (those were the models that were equipped with keyless entry stock) and you HAVE have the stock radio still installed (or the transmitter box from a 99-00).

yeah, its pretty retarded to have the keyless entry system built into the radio. I just finished installing an aftermarket radio into my '98 EX and i have to stuff the stock radio behind the 12V socket panel in order to keep the keyless. HOWEVER, the stock radio is huge so i had to separate it from its housing in order to tuck it away. What a b*tch that was!
