Most manufacturers use a straight cut gear for the reverse gear in transmissions. Because of this, it will make a whine/or hum. I don't know the technical reasons for this, I just know it is what they do.

So you don't worry about it

I only hear the whine/hum sound when backing up in reverse on cars with a manual trans, autos don't seem to make this noise.

my old automatic 93 Civic did it

I think it's more noticeable with manuals because in reverse it's hard to back up slowly and balance the clutch just right to get a smooth and slow back up. The thing always wants to buck.

Its normal im pretty sure every civic does it, lower gears tend to be whiny.
