Long story please help.
So I think i have a 95 hatchback. Reason why I'm not 100% sure is because I recently had to put in a new alternator and when I took the old one in they said it was an 89 but my title and registration say 95. So I am lead to believe that the previous owner put an 89 motor in. Anyway about a week later I took a really long drive on the highway and my rpms were at about a constant 2900 or so and I had stopped at a toll booth and I heard a harsh rattling noise from the engine bay. It sounded like a piece of metal was rubbing on something. This noise was followed by an occasional squeak when I had stopped on the side of the road to check on it I shut off the car and an oil like substance started leaking from somewhere but I don't think it was oil... It only leaked for a couple minutes and it was very slow. So I tried to turn around and make it back home and 15 minutes into going home my rpms went straight to 0 and the engine died. There was no warning not even a check engine light or battery light. The car didn't slow down or anything it was as if the car was in neutral but I was in 5th gear when it died. So I pulled over and the engine would turn over and there was no clicking to indicate a dead battery. It was as if I tried to start it without pushing in the clutch. So what do you guys think is wrong? My clutch had been acting up a little during the last couple days before it broke down. But my dad told me that I messed up the motor but he hasn't looked at it yet. Could it be a bad alternator? When I turned the key And the wouldn't turn over all the lights turned off except for oil and battery.
