Default Low Idle in Neutral

I have a 97 civic and whenever I am in neutral my RPM idles barely above the 500 mark. It feels like my car is about to choke an die. Last time this happened to me it was because i had broken cap on my distr. The distr was fine when i checked it now? So it's not the distr itself. I want to check the alternator but the damn thing is so hard to get out cuz it's hidden under my intake manifold. can someone help???

take it to an auto parts store, most of them will check the battery and alternator for free.
