pull the spark plugs, make sure they're not soaked in gasoline. make sure you're getting spark. Make sure your battery is good and strong. I have a feeling you're not getting spark

I have had the screw come out of the rotor in the distributor and the shaft spins but the rotor doesn't.
Take the cap off and see if the rotor is attached to the shaft or just spins.
I was lucky, the screw was laying in the bottom of the dizzy and didn't tear anything up.
Put it back in and it fired right up.

Starting diagnostics 101... ish

Symptoms: Starter is working, but car is not turning over.
Possible problems? Main relay, igniter, distributor, spark plugs

First order of business, main relay.
- When you turn the key to position 2, seatbelt beeping, check engine light should come on for a bit, and you should hear a faint whirring noise until the check engine light turns off (When the light turns off, you should hear a *click*)
- If you do not hear the whirring, or the click, problem is going to be the main relay going bad which equals no fuel pump priming.

If that is all normal...

Second order of business, testing spark.
- Pull one of the spark plug wires out of the hole. If you have a spare spark plug hanging around, you won't need to ratchet the actual spark plug out of your motor. Attach a spark plug to the spark plug wire, and then ground the threads on it. For example, a clip and some wire attached to anywhere on the chassis is a great idea.
- Stare at the spark plug while someone tries to turn over the car. If you see a spark, good.

The potential cure!
IF it is the main relay... you could replace it, or repair it yourself. Google is your friend. A temp fix is to just tap on the main relay, which will hopefully cause the bad connections to connect allowing the pump to prime.

Since you replaced the distributor, I assume you have a new ignition coil in the dizzy as well.

I had this gas smell in my old 90-91 cx hatchback. Apparently it was something to do with the charcoal canister... See, the gas tank vents to under the hood, into the canister. Or something, I'm no professional in that area.
Let us know if you need more guidance!

Try tapping all around your fuel filter with the rubber handle of a screw driver. When it is really hot outside, sometimes they get clogged up and ****. My car wouldn't turn over yesterday so I tapped all around it for about 2 mins and it started right up.

Check whether the timing belt skipped a tooth or two.
