I have a 1997 5 speed honda civic with 71000 miles on it. it is a 1.6 liter SOHC VTEC. When i am in first, second, and third gear, up to 3000 rpms, it makes this funny purring sound but after 3000 rpms and when i am in fourth and fifth gear it does not make the sound. i think it is my transmission but someone please help me because i am really clueless.

 

Is it like a PUUUUURRRRRRRRRR! or is it like a PUR PUR PUR PURT! cuz it sounds like its just ur muffler bearings are shot [:'(][:-] er i mean ur exhaust system has a small hole in it or your manifold gasket is worn. try and pop the hood and then try and listen to the sound that ur engine makes...or it could be that when they change your oil last time they forgot to put the air filter back in your car cuz when you take ur air filter out it no longer muffles the sound comming from in ur combustion chamber, you could check that but it doesn't sound like a tranny problem to me :/
