need help with timing
i am having trouble at setting the ignition timing. I beleive i am not getting mechanical timing right bc it seems im a tooth off when setting ignition. i go off the chart to line up the mark with the cyl head but the marks dont match with the cyl head. I have a 93 d15b7. Any1 have a pic from their actual car that i can go off of? should the right line line up with the head and the left one down a little or should the left line line up and right side down a little?
ok the best i can do is get the ignition timing to 15 degrees btdc it should be 16 degrees. Does it matter that this motor used to have an auto tranny on it? bc an auto is suppose to be set at 14 degrees and 15 is the best i can get. Any ideas where i can get the dizzy to be reatred one more degree.
Do you have the test jumper in? If you have the test jumper in properly, it will make the CEL light up steady when you start the engine to set the timing. If that is the case then you need to move the timing belt by a tooth. Any non-VTEC head should work the same.
I thought the spec was 10 degree BTDC. Set your timing light to zero if it is one of the fancy ones with a dial, and time to the center mark on the group of 3 on the pulley. The marks are 8, 10, and 12, with the single mark away from them being zero.

well this is a 5 spd and online and manual say 16d btdc for a b15b7 which is the red line. Do you have a non v tech 1.5. if so can u post a pic of how it line up bc i cannon get my cam gear to line up with the head. Im pretty sure its a stock cam for that head.i also would like to add when i put the jumper in the check engine light stays solid. Shoul it blink?
How are you even quoting degree numbers to set it? The timing marks are just notches in the accessory pulley, no degree scale is provided. CEL should be on solid in test mode so that's good. The marks on the cam pulley should be within 1/2 of the width of a tooth on the timing belt, that's the best you can do by slipping the belt a tooth at a time.
ok that helps. The car ran great but since i couldnt get the ignition timing right it was idle 550-600. one question for ya. If i need to retard the timing which way should i go with the timing belt. I would like the mechanical timing to be good. Any pics other than the drawings people post?mabe an actual one from someones car who has a 1.5 non vtech so i know where to line the marks with.
i tried to work on it alittle more this morning. Everytime i try i cant get it. I found a post where a guy said i can be 2-3 teeth off either way i put it a tooth off both way one made it worse the other stayed the same.should i try and move it over another tooth on the cam?i think if i do it won even line up with the head. Mabe i have a different cam where i should be going off the z6 mark? if so how do i tell.
Make sure that the word "UP" is at the top. The two slash marks on the cam gear should be even with the top edge of the head casting. One tooth off either way is bad. You get to three teeth off it seems likely the valves could crash. It is not something that you can mess around with.
Bottom line is that if you can get the spark in time in the center of the range, the cam must be OK.
Probe in cylinder #1 to confirm the crank is at TDC (the piston all the way up). The accessory pulley may have been put on wrong so the marks on it make no sense. At TDC, the single notch in the pulley will be under the plastic pointer on the bottom cover.

well see my prob is i cant get both lines to line up with the head. the best i can get the ignition timing set to is the first line out the three. Would this mean its off a tooth still? Ok im goona give some more info about my car it could be something else that could be ****ing it up. The car is a 93 cx had the d15b8. i bought a d15b7 out of a 93 dx. I had to wire my own map. I bought a tb off a auto car i dont think that has anything to do with it. So anyways i created my own harness for the map. Map is working no cel. The head on the motor is from a b2 but the block is a b7 so i dont know if the cam gear from the b2 and b7's were different. What else can be causing me to not be able to get the ignition timing right?
