Do a few fuel system checks. First loosen the gas cap to release any pressure in the tank. Then take the fuel return hose off, it is between the fuel pressure regulator and the metal return line to the tank. Disconnect the hose at the firewall and direct it into a container.

Turn the key on but don't try to start. Gas should come out while the pump primes. This gives you a sample of gas from the fuel rail. If none comes out, the fuel pump is not making sufficient pressure, filter clogged, etc.

If the gas is old, definitely put some fresh in the tank.

You might also want to check whether the ON(II) position of the ignition switch is faulty for the IG1 terminal.

Disregard my idea about IG1 because I think you mentioned that the CEL turns ON and then OFF and the fuel pump primes when you turn the ignition key to ON position II. If so, the IG1 terminal of the ignition switch is fine.

three things to check for:

spark
fuel
compression

eliminate one by checking out the others...it can only be one or the other

Is your Z6 engine set precisely to TDC1 using the timing marks shown in the diagram below?

One last thought. Is the distributor possibly installed incorrectly or are the plug wires out of order? Cylinders are numbered 4-3-2-1 from left to right as you are facing the front of the car.

Sounds good. Verify that you still have TDC1 by showing that the cam gear is at TDC1 when the white mark on the crank pulley is aligned with the pointer on the lower timing belt cover.
