Always when something doesn't light up, check the bulb first and go from there. If you find a bunch of blown bulbs the alternator may be overcharging so there is too much voltage. Check that power is reaching the brake light switch and also appears on the other side when you press the pedal. It is common for the wires in the back to break where they flex every time you open the hatch or trunk. Also the sockets get rusty and lose contact with the bulbs.

When you push the turn signal lever right, what happens? Anything? Does the light on the dash or either of the lights on the outside of the car come on?

Press the 4 way blinker button, do all the bulbs blink? If so go to the next test--

Take the steering column cover off and unplug the 3 wire plug from the turn signal switch. Jump the green-orange to the green-blue (turn key on) and it should blink left. Then jump the green-orange to the green-yellow and it should blink right. If it blinks OK by bypassing the switch, the switch is bad.

OK moving on to the brake lights you should check the switch on the brake pedal arm. Check that power is reaching it. One terminal would be live all the time and the other live only when the pedal is pressed.
