Unhappy Noisy gear box / diff????

Hello Forum, new to this world so forgive my innocence looking for some advice as I 've consulted 5 different mechanics and got 5 different answers and am sick of being dicked around. Have Civic 1.4 2003 which has developed a noise like postman pats van when in gear ( most noticable in first) thought maybe it was low on transmission fluid but am currently unable to check this myself. Garages point blank won't just check it for me ( to be fair have noticed a leak) have been told need new clutch, diff whole gear box etc etc.....advice greatly appreciated Ta! Fiona.

If it's like the US models it should have a plug on the outside side of the transmission behind (towards the rear of the car) the axle, and about the same height as the axle. It needs a 17 mm wrench to loosen it. The fluid should be up to the level of the hole when you take the plug out. In other words, with the car on level ground, put fluid in there until it will take no more because it starts running out the hole.

The fluid to use is Honda Manual Transmission Fluid, or if you can't get that, use 10W40 motor oil. Do not use heavy gear oil.

You may want to take the drain plug out first and drain it, measure how much came out, then refill with new fluid. Again if it's like the US models it takes just over 2 quarts (probably almost exactly 2 litres) for a full change. The drain plug is again on the outside side of the unit, at the bottom. Unlike the bolts that hold the case together, it has a head with a square hole in it. The hole accepts a socket ratchet with no socket to turn the plug.

This is a very basic service that any garage should be able to perform. Very strange that they won't.

Thanks for the advice, I know how to check the fluid level - but have just had back surgery so crawling around under cars is out. Times are hard for all , garages included, so I guess they can't be fussed with littile jobs! Ta!
