Your original key most likely has a chip in it that tells the computer that the key in the ignition is an original key. Without the chip, the computer will not allow the car to start. You will need to go to the dealer to get a spare key with the chip in it.

to my knowlege as well, the 98's had no chip....but I don't know if Honda did something else that only dealer-cut keys will work. Keep us posted!

needs a dealer cut key.. i've got a key from home depot that'll open doors, but not start the car, useful for times you lock key in car, but not useful for losing key entirely

It's more a question of if the car features the iLock system that most honda dealers install now, if it does, and you don't have the fob to disable it, car will go into acc, but will not turn over

I havea 97 Civic that starts with non-dealer keys, no problem. The dealer should be able to sell you a correct key if you supply the vin#
