A work acquaintence of mine has a 1999 Civic. His check engine light came on a while back, and he took it to the dealership. They said he's got a bad Oxygen sensor, and they could replace it for $360. This sounded extremely expensive. I offered to help him fix this problem over the weekend. I know it's very kind of me to help out like this, especially when this guy also drives an S2000. Lord knows, he's got the cash to pay for professional labor.

Does the base model Civic from 1999 have one or two O2 sensors on it? Is there any trick to replacing them? I just replaced the sensor on my nissan truck last night and it was very easy. Didn't have to remove any heat shields.

Is O2 sensor part very expensive in Civics? I jsut can't understand why a dealership would want so much money to replace a common part. Hell, that costs as much a timing belt!

 

A 99+ civic is obd2b meaning it has two O2 sensors (both 2a and 2b have two). There is one before the cat and one after the cat.

My CEL came on last week and it turned out that I didn't put the gas cap on all the way. After three trips it'll go out.

The ONLY way to get codes out of a 2b motor though is to have them scanned with a tool.

 

go to autozone. they will do it for free. and that is waaay too damn much for 02 sensors. ebay ya can get some for cheaper

 

to check the codes jump the wire on the right side of the car under the kick-plate. Turn the key and the check engine light will blink, giving you a code (code 14 would be one long blink and four short blinks).to reset the codes remove the fuse of disconnect the bat. make sure you have the radio codes. there are two o2 sensors. one at the top and one at the bottom. it's a bit of a bitch to take off if you don't have the right socket. you can buy aftermarket senors that you have to connect yourself for about $80.00 can of you can buy the honda o2 sensor that plugs in for about $200.00 can

 

Incorrect. the car is OBD2B. You're giving him advice on obd1 cars. It doesn't apply here.

what the hell? are you saying im lying, about that? if im going to lie, it would be about something that made me look good. " yeah, i ran a 12.2 on my stock single cam..." that kinda crap, not about pulling trouble codes out of an obdIIb ecu.

 

I've had four people, including an ASE Certified master mechanic, tell me the only way to pull codes on an obd2 car is to go to a shop and have them scanned with a 10,000 dollar scanner tool.

Or as mentioned above, take it to them and they will check it for free.

Using the jumper wire works but you still don't have a clue as to what the code is telling you. Autozone can give you that info as well. Just make sure you get someone that knows what they are doing.
