Odometer bad?
Hi all....Picked up a '98 Civic DX last weekend. I have a question about the odometer. I picked up the car in Louisville Saturday and gassed up near there in Sellersburg, IN. At that point I reset the trip odometer so I could check mileage back to Indy. It read fine. When I refilled in Indy, I reset the trip odometer again so I could check to see what it'll get to & from work. Last night I filled, checked the mileage, and yikes! 24.9!!?? I figured something was amiss. When I got home, I saw the trip odometer had only gone 13 miles in what should've been a 19 mile trip. So I played with it this morning and sure enough on the way in, it quit working altogether. However, the speedometer works fine. It's just the trip odometer and the odometer that are stuck. Is this something that will likely be in need of replacement or is there something back there I can adjust, or is there something that might've come loose, or did it probably just break?? Thanks for any advice!

Update:
I just checked with one of the dealers. If it needs replacing, they'd have to have the new one sent out to have the mileage set, which could take 3-4 weeks. I'd be looking at around $300 for this little inconvenience.

chances are it got a busted gear in the speedo head
what you could insted of going to the dealer is pick up a good used one from the junk yard - the milage wont be the same -but it will be cheaper
or just keep the one you got & live without a tripometer

Have another question. If I were to get a used instrument cluster and just pull the speedo part out to use, does it matter what model and/or transmission the used would come out of? Since I'm just using the speedo, I didn't know if it mattered what it came out of.
Also, is pulling the cluster to replace the speedo a PITA job, or is it fairly simple?
