if you would like to quiz me feel free.

Ok...

I am curently using vavoline 5w30 and was wondering what the pros and cons of switching to synthetic would be. Would you recomend it, what brand, what filter, how much(do you use more or less oil than normal) Engine is currently stock. Thanks in advance for the help.

Well there arent really any cons...there are myths that say its hard on seals thats untrue. and it doesnt use more oil. if you dont have leaks then you will actually use less oil. Synthetic oil is has most of the same properties of regular oil but it makes a better seal. you do need to change the oil sooner the first time when you switch to a synthetic because forms a better seal and gets deeper in the engine than natural oil with additives.

amsoil has been at it for longer than anybody. they were the first 100% synthetic oil back in 72.

I have done a lot of research on oils and oil filters. All I know is advertisement is not research. Just because you read an article or saw an advertisement in super street doesn't mean that is the best. Hell it doesn't even mean the publisher recommend it, they just publish it because they get paid for the advertisement. Now from all the test performed by many studies including industry standard test, Amsoil has come out on top. I am not saying in anyway that Amsoil is the best, but I will trust studies and personal experience over advertisement and gimmicks anytime. From all the research I have done, I have found out that there are only 3 premium oils out there Amsoil, Neo, and I forgot the other one. If you do your own research and see the results of some of these tests you will probably never use royal purple oils again. There are may oils out there that perform way better and are much cheaper. Now I am not saying synthetic is for everyone either. If you don't plan on keeping your car for long or are leasing your car, regular oil is good enough. Also I cannot say it enough, a good quality filter is just as important if not more important than the oil you use. I would recommend Mobile 1 or Amsoil filter for best filtration. Napa Gold, Wix, even purolater is "ok" for normal filtration. I cannot stress this enough, if you go with synthetic and longer oil change cycles, change the filter at regular oil cycle intervals! I would say this, stay away from fram and castrol syntex/blend.

Edit:

After sleeping on it, I re-read my post and figured someone would get the wrong idea of royal purple oils. First let me say that contrary to what people may believe not all oils are created equally. On the other spectrum there is a misconception that the more the oil cost the better it is. Both of these statements couldn’t be farthest from the truth. What I really meant to say about Royal Purple oils, that while it is not a bad oil, it costs way more than they should. There are far better oils at a lower cost than that one. So just like castrol that got it’s popularity by TV advertisement, it gets its support by advertisement rather than tests and studies. Just my 2 cents.

my 2 cents. Royal Purple was dyno tested in some magazine awhile back, as a test, not an ad, and it did show some decent gains. around 3-5 hp. i dont remember exactly. though i am definately not saying that any good synthetic wouldnt give similar gains over Dino oil, thats the only one i have seen dynoed.

Thanks everyone,
I put in mobil 1 10w 30 on saturday and have been checking it the last two days.
No leaks or smoking detected, Changed the oil and air filter while I was at it.
Next week I'm doing plugs and the follow week brakes. Any suggestions on brands?
Thanks again for everyone opinions!
