Oil Pressure?
New here, so forgive me if I fub this up, or sound stupid...
I have a 90 Civic hatchback with a D15B1 motor all stock. It's pretty far up there in age, with almost 203,000 miles on it, and has a whole list of problems that I have been attempting to trouble-shoot in my spare time. She smokes (a lot) under hard acceleration (blue/oil), so bad in fact that I seem to be losing about three quarts of oil every 1000 miles. I can drive her with a feather foot, and she hardly ever smokes, but if I get relaxed, excited, spooked, or just plain stupid and use my lead foot... Well, let's just say I'm solving a long time mosquitos problem which each pass. LOL
When she is parked, she has a few dips, but nothing to account for the massive amounts of oil I'm losing. So I decided with today's oil change (or refill in my case), that I would go ahead and hook up the oil pressure gauge to see what the old lady shows. To my surprise she is showing 85psi cold (2k rpm), and once warmed up she idles at 50psi (1k rpm). My car also has the idling problem where it sounds like someone is just tapping the gas over and over again. I read an earlier thread here where someone suggested just unplugging the TPS, but I haven't done that yet, because I can't figure out with one is the TPS... [&o] But, anywho with the funny idling she bounces between 50psi and 65psi constantly.
I have check the book, and according to it, this car should have 10 to 15 (low end), and a max of 50. So I guess the extreme oil pressure that i'm experiencing probably has something to do with me blowing my oil out the ole tail pipe. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on, or any suggestions as far as where I should start looking? I'm not opposed to tearing into the motor, but I was waiting for some other things to happen here at home first...
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
FloppyRat

Me again, just been thinking about something that i wanted to throw in with this question/puzzle... This is a D15B1 motor, and has a 16-valve head on it. I spoke with my mother-in-law last night (she's the one that gave me the car), and according to her the car had jumped time a while back, and she took it in to get fixed. She stated that she has had nothing but trouble with it since then as far as it losing oil, and smoking. So I'm wondering if maybe the shop swapped out the head from another honda? Can anyone tell me if this motor ever came from factory with 16-valve heads, or was that just the "B2" series of the D15 blocks? It's a canadian made car, not a JDM or nothin, and just plain. How would I go about tracing down the head if I wanted to find out what motor originally it went on, if it's not this car's original head?
Sorry if I'm rambling, just wanted to put all the information in here, as I'm trying to learn as much as I can on these little cars.
Thanks in advance,
FloppyRat
