Default Question about struts

My friend and I had a debate yesterday while installing some eibach springs/shocks. He said that the left front strut and right front strut is the same thing. It doesn't matter if it's mixed up. He said he had his left strut on his right and his right strut on his left and it fits perfectly and worksfine (he realized that he mixed it up after the installation but didn't want to do it over so he left it like that). Is that true that both struts are the same thing oris it going tomess upthe car in the long run?

I should correct myself and say that they are the same for 92-00 civics, I've never worked on one newer than that, those all have macpherson struts so they may be different. You didn't say what car you're talking about.
