Default question reguarding wheels and tires

I have a 2005 EX Special Edition Civic Coupe. I want to get 17's and I'm not sure what tire would be best fit for the car. I don't want too low profile because the roads around here are bad and I don't want the wheels to bend. I had a 2000 civic a few years back and put 17's with either 35 or 40's and all 4 wheels were bent from the roads, not even hitting potholes. I was thinking 45's and possibly 50's but I don't know if that would cause rubbing. has anyone had 215/45/17 or 215/50/17? Thanks!
