Default Regarding power window on 99 Civic LX

Hi there, haven't been here in a while which is likely good since I've been problem free. Anyways, I was driving last night and a passenger in my back seat lowered the rear window, and noticed it wouldn't go back up. Indeed, it is not functioning. I messed with the child lock and had no luck. All the other windows work fine. I noticed that when I use either the front driver side switch or the switch on the door itself, my idle twitches as if it were actually sending power. I'm not sure if that's helpful information to know, but it doesn't seem to be switch related.

Anyways, I don't live in the best area of town and I have a stereo, nice speakers and a sub and I wanna figure something out hopefully this weekend before transients make my car their home! Is there any troubleshooting I should go through before I try to find a new window motor?

Thanks a ton!

No one's got any sweet window advice for me? If I order the window motor today before 5pm pst, I can get it tomorrow, but if I order tomorrow, I gotta go all weekend with my window down... yikes!

Argh, no one can offer advice on a power window going out? I have the factory manual and can change out the motor but as I'm a dirt poor college student, I don't wanna buy a new motor if there are other troubleshooting steps I should follow first.

Any pointers anyone? Or heck, is there a way to raise the window and secure it in place so I can trust my car won't be so easily broken into?

when my power window went out, it would still work intermittently. But I heard a light scratching sound. That is the motor trying to pull in the string but it is slipping. see if you can hear this sound when you try to put the window back up.

the simplest diagnostic is to open up the door panel and see for yourself. If the motor is out, it is very obvious to the naked eye and also you will see for yourself that it is slipping.

Thank you very much for the reply!

There isn't even the slightest noise occurring when I try to raise the window. It's as if there's either a short or the motor is blown? It was the strangest thing, it rolled down while driving, but never rolled back up... there weren't any intermittent issues. I figure I will open the door, remove the door panel, and see if the wire is disconnected or something? If I can't get it to work, is there any way to force the window up while I wait for a replacement motor?

if it does not move at all, then it looks like the motor finally gave out. I believe if you open it up, you can disconnect the motor and the regulator and set the regulator to it's highest position (i.e. window closed). But don't quote me on this since I've never tried it myself. If the motor is completely dead, then maybe this might not be possible. You can't tell without opening it up. I'd recommend that you do that ASAP. I highly doubt a disconnect wire however. there is really no way for the wires to disconnect.

Hey there. I opened up the door today to try to get at the motor and I'm having a tough time. I took off the panel, and could remove the bolts that hold the window, but I can't actually get the window out of the door. The window is on a rail and is seated pretty tight. Looking at the manual, it says to remove the rail but I have no clue how. There's two visible bolts that hold the rail onto the door, but it still attached at the top somehow underneath the weather strip.

Anyone know how to get this thing out so I can get at the motor?

you don't need to get the window out of the door. unbolt the regulator and the motor and see if you can get the motor to turn (using the switch) and raise the regulator up to it's highest, then you can reconnect it and now you have a closed window until your new regulator and motor comes in. If your motor works without the window, then you know that it is slipping or is not functioning properly since normally it would have to raise the window which is pretty heavy for a little motor.

Hey there. I took out my window motor and detached it from the regulator. The motor doesn't seem completely blown... using the switch on the rear driver side door, the motor spins one direction (to roll the window down) but not the other direction. Even worse, when using the front driver side switch, the motor doesn't work at all. Does this still seem like a motor issue, or is this an electrical issue with my car?

you're correct in that it is not completely blown, but b/c it cannot move in both directions, it is useless as a window regulator motor. I'd get a new one.
